Dit ras ontstond in 1966 uit een kruising van wolf/Duitse herder . Hiervoor werd een van de laatste wilde wolven uit de Apijnen van hoog Lazio gebruikt.
Le loup qui était l’ancêtre de cette race était le mâle Zorro, né en 1966 d’un croissement entre un Berger Allemand et un des derniers loups de la région Appenijnen du haute Lazio en Italie.
This breed appeared in 1996 from a cross of wolf and German shepherd. For this cross one of the last wild wolves from the Apijnen area in high Lazio ( Italy) was used.
De ETLI( instantie voor bescherming van de Italiaanse wolf) zorgt onder bescherming van de staat voor de fok en fokbasis van dit ras. Dit om redenen van genetisch behoud. Het is verboden om buiten deze instantie deze wolfhonden te houden of te fokken.
La race est contrôlée par le ETLI (l’instance pour la protection des loups), élever sans bénéfice, la race est protégé par une directive d’état, qui interdit l’achat et l’élevage autre que par cette instance, pour protéger la base génétique.
